NOAA raised an alert for a geomagnetic storm watch of G4 on Thursday, the top level out of 5 such levels, which is the highest since 2005, NOAA said. The aurora is predicted to occur Friday, April 16 and likely wax through the weekend.
During a press release on Friday afternoon, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center further explains that G5 or extreme effects have been now measured for the first time since 2003.
Earth might get a geomagnetic storm starting from tomorrow which would make the northern lights visible for most of Michigan and not just the northern portion of it.
Geomagnetic storms, being expressions of great impulses in the Earth’s magnetosphere due to the energy provided by solar wind, are one of the most destructive phenomena of this type. In fair weather, the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, create illumination that excludes the areas which are located near the poles more north and south.
It is predicted that the exceptional will already appear during the late Friday and early Saturday night. Conclusively, the optimal places for seeing northern lights would be in northern Michigan and up north. Nevertheless, the strength of the hurricane is powerful that it has extended to Alabama’s southern parts.
Since northern lights are most commonly seen in the night sky, tomuchafter 10p. m. is the best time to watch them, according to Michigan Technological University, and many experts suggest waiting until midnight to catch them.
