Northern lights in Michigan during Severe solar storm

People have a chance to look at the Northern lights in Michigan in the sky over their hometown on Friday night. When it is light, it is not often visible at state’s southern parts that are located away from the northern hemisphere. A geomagnetic storm is the consequence of a coronal mass ejection from the sun, which if low enough can make it visible in any state of the country.

NOAA raised an alert for a geomagnetic storm watch of G4 on Thursday, the top level out of 5 such levels, which is the highest since 2005, NOAA said. The aurora is predicted to occur Friday, April 16 and likely wax through the weekend.

During a press release on Friday afternoon, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center further explains that G5 or extreme effects have been now measured for the first time since 2003.

Earth might get a geomagnetic storm starting from tomorrow which would make the northern lights visible for most of Michigan and not just the northern portion of it.

Geomagnetic storms, being expressions of great impulses in the Earth’s magnetosphere due to the energy provided by solar wind, are one of the most destructive phenomena of this type. One way the sun can affect our planet is by the heavy storms that follow the explosions of the coronal mass ejection when tons of plasma-hot gas and magnetic fields are expelled. As announced in its release Thursday, NOAA noted that at least five CMEs had been noticed to be earth directed.

This as well as there were the almost more severe solar flare which contribute to 16 times the size of earth’s diameter and these are reported to come from a complex, sunspot cluster, according to NASA.

It is worth to note that during the period of solar cycle, since 2019, only three storms occurred, which is considered to be harsh geomagnetic storms. The general storm can destabilize electricity grids; damage communications satellites and equipment used to communicate with space flights; and jammed beaming or transmission of the radio signals.

The effect of the solar storm can be that “the electrical current that is not the normal basis” (Robert Steenburg, a scientist in space at Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado) induces; “our role is therefore to alert the operators of these different systems so that they are aware of what is going on and to be capable of taking measures that can mitigate these kinds of impacts” (Robert Steenburg).

In fair weather, the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, create illumination that excludes the areas which are located near the poles more north and south.

It is predicted that the exceptional will already appear during the late Friday and early Saturday night. Conclusively, the optimal places for seeing northern lights would be in northern Michigan and up north. Nevertheless, the strength of the hurricane is powerful that it has extended to Alabama’s southern parts.

Since northern lights are most commonly seen in the night sky, tomuchafter 10p. m. is the best time to watch them, according to Michigan Technological University, and many experts suggest waiting until midnight to catch them.

“Our distance from Earth uncertain the exact timing of these events because we are talking about a disaster which has an object thing 93 million miles away,” said Shawn Dahl, the service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center during a press call.

It is “very hard” I mean to find the correct date with a high degree of accuracy, the “arrival of these events” the sun emits “because there are so many interactions” in the solar wind . . . however, the confidence level of this one’s arrival on Earth is very high. The only thing we’re sure about to the extent of timing. ”

Its elevated latitude and the fact that no mountains make lay their host to north coast of the Lake Superior make the Upper Peninsula an exceptional place in the continental USA to see the aurora.

Solar flare particles can get relatively easier to intercept with the earth’s magnetic field during April, October and November (close to spring and autumn equinoxes), these months being peak season when we can see ribbons of blue, green, pink and violet light. However, including the Aurora Borealis in the every day life of people is not related to any season.

Still, the midnight sun will let the northern lights stealthily slip past us, but this is an elusive phenomenon that it requires clear skies, a dark night, watching out for weather forecasts, a bit of luck and, perhaps, its special form of magic.

The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has 30-minute forecasts which can be used to figure out what the most favorable day of the week and time of the day to meet whale-watching experience will be. Other apps could be used to find when they will be the sharpest by custom modules.
